Bigley, Broadhurst Recommended to Serve as Vice Chairs Of Pitt's Board of Trustees

PITTSBURGH—At its public meeting this morning, the Nominating Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees recommended to the full board the establishment of the positions of vice chairpersons of the board and the election of Thomas G. Bigley and Suzanne W. Broadhurst as vice chairpersons of the board. The committee also recommended to the full board that J. David Barnes be elected an emeritus trustee. The full board is expected to act upon these recommendations at its next meeting, Thursday, Oct. 23.

An alumnus of the University, Bigley is Retired Managing Partner of Ernst & Young. After serving as an alumni trustee from 1985 to 1988, he was appointed a Commonwealth trustee by Governor Tom Ridge in 1995. Bigley is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, Pitt's Bicentennial Medallion of Distinction, and the University of Pittsburgh Trustee Medallion.

Bigley serves on the Pitt Board of Trustees' audit, institutional advancement, and nominating committees, and he also is a member of the Pitt Graduate School of Public Health Board of Visitors, a board he previously chaired. He previously served as chair of the Pitt board's Athletics Committee, and was a member of the board's Executive Committee and the Special Trustee Committee on Technology Transfer. Bigley also served on two Pitt athletic director search committees.

Suzanne W. Broadhurst, director of Corporate Giving for Eat 'n Park Hospitality Group, has served as a Pitt trustee since 1995. She serves on the Pitt board's Institutional Advancement Committee—which she chaired for more than six years—and was instrumental in planning and coordinating the University's highly successful Discovery Weekend in October 2000.

Broadhurst serves on the Pitt board's Nominating Committee and Student Affairs Committee, and she has been on the board's Executive Committee for seven years. She chairs the Pitt School of Nursing Board of Visitors, and she previously served on the visiting boards for Pitt's Learning Research and Development Center and School of Nursing.

Barnes, chair emeritus of Mellon Bank N.A., served as a Pitt trustee for 16 years, from 1987 to 2003. During his tenure on the Pitt board, Barnes served on the audit, budget, executive, institutional advancement, and property and facilities committees. He chaired several ad hoc committees of the board, including the Ad Hoc Long Range Planning Committee and the Ad Hoc Subcommittee of the Investment Committee, and he was a member of the search committee that elected Mark A. Nordenberg chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh.

Barnes currently chairs the Pitt University Center for International Studies Board of Visitors and is an emeritus member of Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business/College of Business Administration Board of Visitors. In 2003, Barnes received the University of Pittsburgh Trustee Medallion.
