University of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Host International Biological Ion Channels Workshop
PITTSBURGH—Biological ion channels—the pathways chemicals travel in cells for functions ranging from regulating heartbeat to a body's reaction to anesthesia—will be the focus of a workshop titled "From Structure to Function: Frontiers of Biological Ion Channels," hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) May 21-23 at the PSC, Mellon Institute, on Forbes Avenue, in Oakland.
The workshop will feature 18 internationally renowned experts from the United States, Canada, and Israel, who will discuss experimental and computational aspects of protein channel science and lead intensive discussions of outstanding problems concerning mechanisms of channel assembly, ion permeation through open channels, and channel gating. Members of the Pittsburgh ion channel community are encouraged to attend the workshop and to present posters.
The workshop is sponsored by Pitt's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, the National Center for Research Resources, and the PSC's Biomedical Initiative.
