Pitt to Host Federal Career Day Dec. 6

PITTSBURGH—College students and other individuals interested in pursuing careers with the federal government are invited to attend Federal Career Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, in Rooms 2K/2M/2P56 Posvar Hall,

230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland.

Federal Career Day is sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), Pitt's Career Services, the Pittsburgh Federal Executive Board, the Partnership for Public Service, the Carnegie Mellon University H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management, and Duquesne University.

"This is an event to encourage Pittsburgh-region undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni and others, to apply for federal government internships and jobs," said GSPIA Dean Carolyn Ban. "Attendance will help students network, gather information, and begin the application process."

U.S. Congressman Mike Doyle (D-18) will address the attendees, and government officials will deliver presentations regarding careers in federal service.

Among the approximately 30 organizations and federal agencies scheduled to participate in the job fair are the Federal Mediation Conciliation Service, Social Security Administration, Office of Personnel Management-Retirement Operations Center, Office of U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Secret Service, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Veterans Affairs-Pittsburgh Healthcare System, Partnership for Public Service, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Federal Executive Board, Department of Housing and Urban Development, National Labor Relations Board, U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Surface Mining, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, VISTA, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Federal Career Day is open to the public. The first 500 students who arrive will receive a complimentary copy of "Red, White, and Blue Jobs," a guide to getting hired by the federal government, printed and donated by the Partnership for Public Service. Individuals can register in advance by e-mailing their name and university affiliation to fedday@pitt.edu. Walk-in attendees also are welcome. Attendees are encouraged to dress professionally and to bring several copies of their resumes.
