Pitt to Dedicate New Library Resource Facility on Thomas Boulevard in Point Breeze Oct. 2

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh University Library System (ULS) will dedicate its new state-of-the-art Library Resource Facility from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7500 Thomas Blvd., in Point Breeze.

Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg, Provost James V. Maher, and ULS Director Rush G. Miller will deliver remarks at the 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting, which will be followed by guided tours of the facility.

The facility, which will occupy three floors of the five-story former Emerson Electric Building, will employ 65 ULS staff and administrators. It was designed to help ease the overflow of materials from Pitt's Hillman Library in Oakland, and will house a number of ULS operations, including the Archives Service Center, which houses all University archives as well as important collections reflecting Pittsburgh's history; the preservation lab; the Digital Research Library; technical services; gifts and exchange; and information systems.

Among the collections to be housed at the new facility are the Dick Thornburgh Archives, the Frick family industrial papers, the Thomas Starzl papers, the Archives of Industrial Society, and the Pittsburgh City Photographer Collection. Preservation lab personnel will demonstrate the construction of archival storage boxes and display the machinery used to deacidify and repair brittle and damaged books. Items from various collections will be on display, including the 9/11 Memorial Book that was recently presented to Pitt by its Student Government Board.

DIRECTIONS:

Take Fifth Avenue east toward Shadyside. Turn right onto Penn Avenue, left onto Braddock Avenue, and left onto Thomas Boulevard. The site is about 15 minutes from Pitt's Oakland campus.
