PITTSBURGH—From Chinese cooking to financial planning, there is something for everyone in the September-November session of Pitt's Center for Lifetime Learning (CLL). A division of the College of General Studies, CLL is offering a variety of 140 noncredit classes, workshops, and programs, most held on the Oakland campus, to help adults pursue a favorite interest or gain new skills for career advancement

The fall schedule includes an expanded array of professional enrichment courses, among them "Business Communication: Writing That Works" and "Accounting for Non-Accountants." For the first time, individuals who complete three core classes and three electives over the course of two years may earn a noncredit CLL certificate in professional communication skills.

Some CLL courses will explore contemporary issues, including "In Defense of Our Civil Liberties: Before and After September 11" and "Perspectives on the Middle East." There are a trio of courses on the Civil War, classes on the history of the Pittsburgh area, a six-part series on the art and architecture of Italy, and a walking tour of downtown Pittsburgh churches. A course called "Understanding Opera" will be offered prior to a Pittsburgh Opera performance of Verdi's "A Masked Ball." Other classes include hiking in Laurel Park, Buddhist techniques of meditation, Indian cooking, fiction writing, and tasting French wine. An entire section of courses is designed especially for individuals 55 years of age and older. Details on courses are available on-line at www.pitt.edu/~cgs/lifetime.

Most classes are held weekends or evenings, to accommodate working adults. Fees range from $18 for single-class courses to more than $100 for multi-week classes. Locations of classes are revealed at the time of registration. For more information, or to register for a class, contact CLL at www.pitt.edu/~cgs/lifetime or 412/648-2560
