Angela Davis to Give Lecture at Pitt April 5

PITTSBURGH—Professor, author, and political activist Angela Davis will give a free lecture titled "Globalism, Terrorism, and Gender" at 7 p.m. April 5 in Room 120 of Pitt's David Lawrence Hall, in Oakland; the free talk is sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh's Women's Studies Program in collaboration with the Black Action Society. Davis also will give a free teach-in on resistance movements from 9 a.m. to noon April 6 in Room 2M56 of Pitt's Posvar Hall.

A professor in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Davis gained her international reputation in the early 1970s, when she was tried for conspiracy and imprisoned after being implicated in a shootout in front of a California courthouse in an effort to free George Jackson, an inmate she had befriended. A trial judge and three people were killed, and, though not at the crime scene, Davis was charged when police claimed that the guns used were registered in her name. She spent two weeks evading police and became only the third woman in history to appear on the FBI's most-wanted list. Davis was arrested and spent 16 months in jail prior to her acquittal on all charges.

Davis continues to be a strong voice against racism in the justice system. She founded the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and also helped to found Critical Resistance, a national organization dedicated to prison reform, and cofounded the Committees of Correspondence, which promotes democracy and socialism.

Davis received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandeis University in 1965 and the Master of Philosophy degree from the University of California at San Diego in 1968. She is the author of five books, among them "If They Come in the Morning: Voices of Resistance" and "Women, Cultures, and Politics," a collection of her speeches.
