Pitt's Black Law Student Association to Host Ujima Awards Brunch Pittsburgh lawyer, judge, law firm, Pitt dean, and alumnus to be honored

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh Black Law Students Association (BLSA) will hold its first Ujima Champagne Brunch at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, Fifth Ave., Oakland. The brunch will recognize persons and firms within the Pittsburgh community who have made an effort to increase and retain minority law students, judges, and lawyers.

Adopting the theme Ujima, which means collective work and responsibility in Kiswahili, BLSA's brunch celebrates the faces of the African diaspora in the legal community. Timothy Lewis, a partner at Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP, will present the keynote address. Lewis also is a former judge of the United States Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

The following individuals and organizations will receive special service awards at the brunch: Lewis, outstanding lawyer award; Buchanan Ingersoll, outstanding law firm award; David Herring, Pitt law school dean, outstanding law faculty award; K. Leroy Irvis, former Pennsylvania Speaker of the House, outstanding Pitt law alumnus award; Marilyn Barnett, outstanding community activist award; and The Honorable Kimberly Clark, judge of the Court of Common Pleas, outstanding judge award.
