Author of "ALL THE RAGE: The Story of Gay Visibility in America" to Speak Feb. 8 at theUniversity of Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH From the public outing of Ellen DeGeneres to the vicious murder of Matthew Shepard, gay lives and images have moved onto the center stage of public American life. Suzanna Danuta Walters, author of a new book that explores the visibility of gays in our culture, will give a free talk at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in Room 2E51 of the University of Pittsburgh's Posvar Hall, 230 So. Bouquet St., in Oakland.
Walters' book, "ALL THE RAGE: The Story of Gay Visibility in America" published by the University of Chicago Press on National Coming Out Day, Oct. 11, 2001 is being called the first authoritative guide to this era of unprecedented gay visibility.
Combining personal stories with an analysis of today's contradictory messages in television shows, films, advertising, and politics, Walters argues that we live in a time when homosexuals are seen everywhere, but not necessarily known.
Walters is associate professor of sociology and director of the women's studies program at Georgetown University. She is on the National Research and Advisory Board of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). For more information, contact the Pitt Women's Studies Program at 412/624-6485.
