Pitt School of Education Alumnus Libby Cataldi to Read and Sign Her Book "Stay Close: A Mother's Story of Her Son's Addiction" Nov. 20

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh School of Education will host a reading and book signing by alumnus and author Libby Cataldi (MEd '73, EdD '79) from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 20, in the Colloquium Room, 5604 Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland.

Cataldi's book, "Stay Close: A Mother's Story of Her Son's Addiction" (St. Martin's Press, 2009), is the account of a child's addiction from a parent's point of view. The book also offers the son's perspective, giving details of what was happening to him.

Cataldi followed the advice of an Italian recovering addict who told her, "Stagli vicino, stay close-never leave him, even when he is most unlovable." Her book is about what it means to continue loving someone gripped by addiction. The story reveals trauma and despair, but also hope and healing.

The book's Afterword, written by Patrick MacAfee, a doctor who has worked with addicts and their families for more than 40 years, offers detailed information about how to deal with a loved one's addiction.

The reading, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a book signing and reception. Copies of the book will be available for purchase from University Book Center staff at the event.
