University of Pittsburgh to Host 13th Annual Model United Nations Nov. 9

Contact:

PITTSBURGH-Approximately 430 students from 26 high schools will participate in the University of Pittsburgh's 13th Annual Model United Nations Simulation from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 9 in the William Pitt Union, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

Students participating in the Model UN are given the opportunity to assume the role of diplomats and take part in mock sessions of bodies of the United Nations, including the Human Rights Council, Environment Programme, novice-level Development Programme, Economic and Financial Committee, Security Council, and the Disarmament and International Security Council. Each school delegation is assigned a country to represent in the negotiations, and this year, 49 countries will be represented. To prepare for the event, students research their assigned countries' positions on a number of real-world issues.

Participants will discuss such issues as instability in the Asian subcontinent, chaos in Haiti, high seas piracy, nuclear proliferation, spiking commodity prices, offshore banking, clean water and sanitation, urban sprawl, alternative energy, persistent organic pollutants, slavery, and prisoners' rights. Students will be evaluated on their abilities to realistically present the positions of the countries they represent, and awards will be given to outstanding students and country delegations.

The event is sponsored by Pitt's University Center for International Studies with special acknowledgement to the Asian Studies Center, Global Studies Program, Center for Latin American Studies, Center for Russian and East European Studies, the European Union Center of Excellence/European Studies Center, and by Pitt's International Business Center and Model UN Club, and the Global Solutions Education Fund Pittsburgh and the United Nations Association of Pittsburgh.

Members of Pitt's Model UN Club have played an integral part in planning the event and will participate in the roles of UN Secretary General, committee chairs, and members of the UN staff.
