PITTSBURGH-Roger D. Klein, associate professor in the University of Pittsburgh School of Education's Department of Psychology in Education, has received the 2009 Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Media Psychology. The award will be presented by the American Psychological Association's (APA) Division of Media Psychology at the APA annual convention to be held in Toronto in August.

During the meeting, Klein and his colleagues will deliver two poster presentations titled "Text Messaging in Class: Reactions of University Faculty" and "Text Messaging in College Students."

A member of the Division of Media Psychology since 1988, Klein joined the University in 1969. He has worked as a freelance health reporter for WPXI-TV, CNBC, and PBS.

Since 1999, Klein has produced a twice-weekly radio series for KQV 1410 AM, originally called "The Psychology Minute" and, in 2007, renamed "The Healthcare Quality Minute". The Jewish Healthcare Foundation has sponsored the segment since 2000.

In 2003, Klein began working with Wadsworth Publishing, a provider of books, online, and multimedia solutions for the humanities and the behavioral and social sciences. He has produced video segments to showcase the research labs of psychologists and neuroscientists from around the country. A total of 55 videos, which complement Wadsworth textbooks, have been published by Wadsworth in two separate volumes. "Research in Action," Vol. 1, was published in 2008; Vol. 2 is due out later this year.

Klein's recent articles include "The Psychology Minute" published in 2005 in "The Amplifier", the Division of Media Psychology newsletter; "Audience Reaction to Local TV News" and "Broadcast News Portrayals of Minorities," both in 2003 in American "Behavioral Scientist"; and "Parasocial Interaction, the Elderly, and Learning from Television News," with R. B. Faux and K. Spotts, in 2002 in "Southwest Journal on Aging".

Among Klein's honors are a 2001 Pitt Chancellor's Distinguished Public Service Award and the annual media award from the Pennsylvania Psychological Association in 1982 and in 2007.
