The University of Pittsburgh to Present March 20 Conference Titled Conflict, Human Security, and Energy: African Reactions to the New U.S. African Command

Contact:

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh will present a conference to examine the United States' new African Command (AFRICOM), which is intended to provide a unified focus for U.S. security concerns and defensive activities in Africa. The conference, being held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 20 in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland, is free and open to the public, though registration is requested.

The AFRICOM leadership is working to develop an inter-agency pattern of security cooperation on the continent by emphasizing diplomatic and development efforts that will foster human security. The AFRICOM initiative is intended to be mutually beneficial to the United States and African countries, and its success is dependent on a strengthened partnership among African leaders.

The conference will present various responses to AFRICOM's new initiative, including military, socio-economic, government, and regional and sub-regional perspectives. Presenters will discuss strategies for African countries to make known their views about issues confronting AFRICOM, including support for anti-terrorism activities, energy security, and competition among leading nations for African markets and raw materials.

To attend, register online at www.ridgway.pitt.edu/africa_registration.asp.

The event is cosponsored by Pitt's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies, Ford Institute for Human Security, University Honors College, African Studies Program, and the Office of the Provost, and by the Professor Saul M. Katz Lectureship on Economic and Social Development, which was established in 1994 through a generous gift from the late GSPIA professor Saul M. Katz-an international authority on economic and social development.
