Measuring Race in Multicultural America the Focus of Pitt Lecture

PITTSBURGH- Howard Hogan, associate director for demographic programs at the U.S. Census Bureau, will deliver a lecture titled "Measuring Race and Ethnicity in a Changing, Multicultural America" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 22, at Pitt's Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP), School of Social Work Conference Center, 2017 Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

The talk, part of the Reed Smith Spring 2009 Speaker Series at CRSP, is free and open to the public. Registration is not required and lunch will be provided. For more information, call 412-624-7382.

Hogan has more than 30 years experience in the design, management, and analysis of surveys, including both household and business surveys. In his position at the Census Bureau, he leads the statistical programs that produce population estimates. Under his leadership, important advances have been made in the methods for estimating poverty and in the development of special techniques to estimate the demographic impact of hurricanes in the Gulf.

Hogan also is an adjunct professor in the Department of Statistics at George Washington University, a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and chair-elect of the association's Survey Research Methods Section.
