Pitt's Learning Policy Center to Host Lecture by Jane Hannaway, Director of Urban Institute's Education Policy Center in Washington, D.C., Dec. 3
PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh School of Education's Learning Policy Center (LPC) will feature Jane Hannaway, founding director of the Education Policy Center within the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C., as part of LPC's 2008-09 Colloquium Series from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Dec. 3 in Room 5604 Wesley W. Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland.
Hannaway's talk is titled "Unbounding Rationality: Education Policy and Practice in a Data-Rich Environment." She will discuss the data systems that states and school districts are developing in response to accountability policies. In addition, Hannaway will consider the likely effects of these data systems on the structure, goals, and processes of education.
An organizational sociologist whose work focuses on the study of educational organizations, Hannaway also is the director of a new, federally funded research center, CALDER (National Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research), which focuses on how teacher policies, governance policies, and social and economic community conditions affect outcomes for teachers and their students. Of particular research interest is analysis associated with teacher labor markets. Hannaway previously served on the faculty of Columbia, Princeton, and Stanford universities.
Currently, Hannaway is on the National Research Council's study committee on value-added measures. Much of her recent research has focused on structural reforms in education, including reforms promoting accountability and those related to human resource management in education.
The mission of Pitt's LPC is to advance ideas that encompass both education policy and research on teaching and learning. The LPC utilizes Pitt's School of Education, Learning Research Development Center, Institute for Learning, and other regional assets to connect high-quality learning research with education policy decision makers.
