Pitt's Korean Heritage Room Committee to Sponsor Korean Dance and Music Performance Oct. 19

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh's Korean Heritage Room Committee will host the NOW Dance Company in "Traditions and Its Changes," a performance of traditional and contemporary Korean dance and music, at 3 p.m. Oct. 19 in Synod Hall, 125 N. Craig St., Oakland.

The event will benefit the Korean Heritage Room's building fund. The performance is being organized and sponsored by The Korea Society, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the promotion of greater awareness, understanding, and cooperation between the United States and Korea. Additional sponsors are the Korean Association of Greater Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Korean School.

Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $15 general admission and are available through ProArtsTickets at www.proartstickets.org or 412-394-3353.

NOW Dance Company is a professional dance company with a repertoire of more than 40 works. Founded in 1992, the dance company has toured Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Turkey, Russia, and the United States. The group has performed in such venues as the Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

In-young Sohn, founder and artistic director of NOW, is a former member of the Korean Traditional National Dance Company and a former artistic director of the Seoul Performing Arts Company. She holds an MA degree in arts education from Teachers College at Columbia University and is pursuing a PhD degree in Asian arts and philosophy at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul. In 2005, Sohn received the Arts of the Year Award from the Korean Culture and Arts Foundation for a choreographed work titled "Internal and External."
