Pitt Graduate Selected for International Fellowship Program
PITTSBURGH-Pitt alumnus Rachael Dizard has been accepted into Humanity in Action's (HIA) 2007 Summer Fellowship Program. Dizard is one of 57 individuals from around the country to be selected for this honor.
Within the fellowship program, U.S. and European students will participate in five weeks of intensive study of contemporary human rights issues. This summer's programs will take place in Denmark, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, and the United States. Dizard will be one of seven U.S. students participating in the Warsaw, Poland, program.
Participation in these core programs provides the foundation for further involvement with HIA. Upon completion of summer fellowships, participants may proceed to international internships to continue their training in human rights issues. Past fellows have used their experiences with HIA to further careers in such fields as education, civil service, journalism, law, and art.
While at Pitt, Dizard studied politics, philosophy, and economics. Since graduating in December 2006 with a BA degree, she has been interning with ACTION-housing, Pittsburgh's oldest affordable housing nonprofit organization, where she assists in the Family Savings Account program.
Dizard has studied abroad in Italy, China, and Central America. She plans to pursue a law degree and a master's degree in public policy and international affairs. A native of Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood, Dizard graduated from Alderdice High School. She is the daughter of Debbie Friedman and Nick Toia of Squirrel Hill and of Charles Dizard of Natrona Heights.
HIA was founded in 1997 to guide student leaders in the study of human rights. Fellows are selected on the basis of high academic achievement, evidence of leadership ability, and demonstrated commitment to human rights issues. This year there were a total of 287 applicants from the United States. Less than a third of the applications were selected for consideration in the second and final phase of the fellowship process.
