PITTSBURGH-JURIST (jurist.law.pitt.edu), the University of Pittsburgh School of Law's legal news and research service, won The Webby People's Voice Award competition. Winners of the Webby awards, which honor excellence in Web design, creativity, usability, and functionality, were released Tuesday by the International Academy of the Digital Arts and Sciences.

The Webby is one of the most prestigious awards an online site can receive. Called "the online equivalent of an Oscar" by The New York Times, the Webby was established in 1996 and leads in international awards of its type.

In the People's Voice Award competition, Web users had the opportunity to vote for the sites they believed to be best in each category. JURIST was one of five finalists in the law category. The other Web nominees were Court TV; FindLaw; Justice Learning, an NPR-New York Times collaboration; and Nolo, legal self-help. The winner is proclaimed based on popular vote. The Webby People's Voice Award gathered more than 200,000 votes from Web users all over the world. This is the first time a law school Web site has won a Webby Award.

JURIST comprises mostly volunteer law student reporters, editors, and Web developers led by University of Pittsburgh law professor Bernard Hibbitts, and is the only law school-based legal news service.
