Expert to Discuss 'Paradox of Preservation' at Pitt April 20

PITTSBURGH-Michèle V. Cloonan, dean and a professor in the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College, will deliver a lecture titled "The Paradox of Preservation" as part of the Policy, Ethics, and Accountability Lecture Series, cosponsored by the University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences and the Johnson Institute for Responsible Leadership in Pitt's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 20, in Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, Schenley Drive, Oakland.

In her talk, Cloonan will discuss the moral, cultural, and ethical issues related to preservation and the recording of history. Her research areas include preserving cultural heritage, education for preservation and conservation, the history of the book and the book trade, and the book arts: bookbinding, papermaking, printing, and publishing.

Founder of the preservation program at Brown University, Cloonan has served as chair and associate professor in the Department of Information Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has held visiting and adjunct professorships at Northern Illinois University and the Universities of Illinois, Rhode Island, and Alabama. Cloonan's honors include the Robert Vosper/International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions Fellows Programme award, the Bibliographic Society of America Fellowship, and a fellowship to the Virginia Center of Creative Arts.

Cloonan earned the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees at Bennington College, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois, respectively.
