Harvard Economist Julie Mortimer to Lecture at Pitt April 18

Contact:

PITTSBURGH--Harvard University Associate Professor Julie Mortimer, whose research on the effect of information technology on distribution methods and retail markets has been reported on in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, will deliver a lecture at the University of Pittsburgh.

Her talk, titled "Price Discrimination Under Copyright Law: Evidence From the Introduction of DVDs," will take place at 3:30 p.m. April 18 in Room 4716 of Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland. It is free and open to the public.

Mortimer's research has focused on the effects of the movie studios pricing decisions to sell video retailers and consumers DVDs at the same price. With VHS-format movies, the studios charged retailers more and forced consumers to wait several months before they could buy at a lower price. She is studying why DVDs are treated differently. In addition to teaching at Harvard, Mortimer is a Faculty Research Fellow with the National Bureau of Economic Research in the Industrial Organization Program. Mortimer's visit to Pitt is sponsored by Pitt's Center for Industry Studies and the Department of Economics.
