PITTSBURGH—Brian Hines, most recently an advisor providing academic support services for student athletes at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named director of the Upward Bound Project, a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Education.

For nearly 10 years, Hines has provided academic support and counseling to students ranging from prekindergarten through college. Prior to joining the Pitt staff, Hines worked as an assistant social development coordinator of the after-school program at the Schenley Heights Community Development Program, as a secondary academic counselor at Peabody High School and Quaker Valley High School, and as an advisor at The Winchester Thurston School.

Currently pursuing a doctorate degree in higher education administration at Pitt, Hines earned the Bachelor of Science degree in business management at Canisius College, N.Y., in 1994 and the Master of Education degree in school counseling and elementary and secondary school certification at Pitt in 1998.

Pitt's Academic Resource Center provides services through Upward Bound to high school students preparing for college. The program, which serves more than 100 high school students a year, aids participants in the mastery of basic academic skills and provides extensive mental preparation for the college experience.
