Kuntu Repertory Theatre Offers Discount For Mahalia Jackson on Sunday, Feb. 5

PITTSBURGH-Pitt's Kuntu Repertory Theatre is offering a discount to all people wearing black and gold to its Feb. 5 performance of Mahalia Jackson: Standing on Holy Ground. Those wearing the Pittsburgh team colors can purchase a ticket for $8 for the 4 p.m performance, a 60 percent discount off the normal $20 ticket price.

Written and directed by Kuntu founder and artistic director and associate professor of Africana Studies Vernell A. Lillie, Mahalia Jackson: Standing on Holy Ground is a joyous musical celebration of the life of the singer who became known as the Queen of Gospel Music. Jackson's unique contralto voice was heard on radio and television and in concert halls around the world. Her appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956 is credited with catapulting gospel music into America's mainstream. She died of heart failure in 1972 at age 59.
