Pitt Law to Host 14th Annual McLean Lecture of World Law Dec. 1

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh School of Law's Center for International Legal Education and the Global Solutions Education Fund-Pittsburgh will host the 14th Annual McLean Lecture on World Law at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Barco Law Building's Teplitz Memorial Court Room, 3900 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

Sean Murphy, professor of law in George Washington University's School of Law, will deliver the lecture, titled "Taking Multinational Corporate Codes of Conduct to the Next Level." The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception.

Dick Thornburgh, a former governor of Pennsylvania, United Nations under-secretary-general, and attorney general of the United States, will share comments on international anti-corruption efforts. He is a 1957 graduate of the University's law school.

At George Washington since 1998, Murphy served as legal counselor for the U.S. Embassy at The Hague in The Netherlands from 1995 to 1998 and was attorney in the U.S. Department of State's Office of the Legal Adviser from 1987 to 1995. His honors and awards include American Society of International Law 2003 Certificate of Merit for United States Practice in International Law, 1991-2001 (Cambridge University Press, 2003); American Society of International Law 1997 Certificate of Merit for Preeminent Contribution to Creative Scholarship for Humanitarian Intervention: The United Nations in an Evolving World Order (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1996); American Bar Association 1996 Outstanding Younger Federal Lawyer Award; American Journal of International Law 1995 Francis Deák Prize for Outstanding Scholarship by a Younger Author for the 1994 article "Prospective Liability Regimes for the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes"; and U.S. Department of State Superior Honors Awards in 1989 and 1998. Murphy has appeared on CNN, News Hour with Jim Lehrer, McLaughlin One-on-One, ABC Evening News, Voice of America TV, National Public Radio, BBC Radio, and Canadian National Radio.

The McLean Lecture on World Law is held in honor of the legacy of Maclean W. McLean, a dedicated World Federalist founder and leader. Previous speakers include Steven M. Schwebel, president judge of the International Court of Justice; Fausto Pocar, judge for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia; Benjamin Ferencz and Henry T. King, former prosecutors at the Nuremberg Tribunals; and Thornburgh.
