Additional Details Announced for 35th Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert Nov. 2-5

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh celebrates its 35th Annual Jazz Seminar and Concert Nov. 2-5. Jazz Week will include a lineup of internationally renowned jazz musicians, free on-campus seminars and lectures, appearances in Pittsburgh-area schools and other community venues, brown-bag lunches with live jazz, a jazz memorabilia exhibition, and the annual concert at 8 p.m. Nov 5 in Carnegie Music Hall, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

Jazz Week guest performers include Nicholas Payton, trumpet; Charles Tolliver, trumpet; James Spaulding, alto saxophone; James Moody, saxophone; Larry Coryell, guitar; Renee Rosnes, piano; Nestor Torres, flute; Abraham Laboriel, bass; and Idris Muhammad, drums. These legendary musicians will perform with and under the direction of saxophonist Nathan Davis, professor of music, head of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program, and founder of the annual event. The concert and lectures will be recorded, and the audio and videotapes will be added to the University of Pittsburgh Sonny Rollins Jazz Archives.

Concert Details

The Nov. 5 concert will feature arrangements by Davis; the diverse playing styles and impromptu nature of the gathering will make this a one-of-a-kind performance. Allegheny County Councilman William R. Robinson will serve as the evening's master of ceremonies. At intermission, Idris Muhammad will receive a special Jazz Hall of Fame Award; James Moody will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award; two musicians will be inducted into Pitt's International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame; and the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert will be awarded the 2005 Mellon Community Jazz Award.

Jazz Memorabilia Exhibition

Jazz memorabilia-including photos, music, and posters-will be on display during Jazz Week in the Connie M. Kimbo Gallery on the main floor of the WPU. The artifacts are housed in the Sonny Rollins Jazz Archives in Pitt's Hillman Library and represent artists who have participated in the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert during the past 35 years.

Brown-bag Lunches

As a preview to Jazz Week and to set the mood on campus, several student musicians from the Pitt Jazz Ensemble will perform from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 19, 26, and Nov. 2 on the main floor of the WPU.

School Visits and Community Outreach

A guest musician also will travel to a Pittsburgh school to conduct a miniclinic for students. Scheduled visits are as follows:
