A Tribute to the Late Nelson Mandela
PITTSBURGH—Twenty-two years ago, on Dec. 6, 1991, anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) addressed a crowd at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum for the H. J. Heinz Company Foundation Distinguished Lecture. The event was hosted by the H. J. Heinz Company Foundation Fellowship Program, administered through the University Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh.
In his address, Mandela said there was a relevance to the struggle to end the system of apartheid in South Africa in the words of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address of 1863. “We, too, must say that our nation ‘shall have a new birth of freedom’,” he said.
He encouraged business leaders in the audience to explore investment opportunities in South Africa and asked that “Americans and South Africans, act together to build a partnership for democracy, for peace, and for prosperity.”
