EXHIBITIONS

Through 2/3 Pitt’s Department of Studio Arts is presenting an exhibition of work from students who participated in the Summer 2011 Studio Arts Field Study in Wyoming, offered through the University Honors College. The exhibition takes place at the University Art Gallery, Frick Fine Arts Building, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. Opening reception is from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 11. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The gallery will be closed Jan. 16. For more information, call 412-648-2430.

1/19 Pitt’s Asian Studies Center and Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures will present a free film screening of Metropolis (2001) at 7 p.m. in the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. 

LECTURES

1/17 Pitt’s European Union Center of Excellence/European Studies Center will host a free interactive video lecture devoted to the current European financial crisis, titled “Is the Future of the Eurozone the Future of Europe?” from noon to 1:30 p.m. in 211 David Lawrence Hall, 3942 Forbes Ave., Oakland. This is the first in a series of Conversations on Europe in which participants and audiences will be linked by video across several sites.  

1/18 Olga Klimova, a graduate student in Pitt’s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, will present a free lecture titled “Tricking Censors: Aesopian Devices in Soviet Cinema Under Brezhnev” from noon to 1:30 p.m., Room 4217, Posvar Hall, 230 S. 1/19 Robert Hitchcock, professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology at Michigan State University, will present a free lecture titled “Human Security and Indigenous Peoples: Lessons From Southern Africa” from 2 to 3 p.m., Room 3431, Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland. The event is sponsored by the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs’ Ford Institute for Human Security. 

1/25 David Montgomery, visiting assistant professor in Pitt’s Department of Anthropology, will present a free lecture titled “Islam and Danger: A Reconsideration of the Link Between Religiosity, Radicalism, and Rebellion in Central Asia” from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Room 4217, Posvar Hall, 230 S. 1/25 Kathleen Short, a research economist for the U.S. Census Bureau, will deliver a free lecture titled “The Supplemental Poverty Measure: Taking Account of Taxes and Transfers” at noon at Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems, 20th floor, Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland.
