PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s Student Health Service will sponsor Tobacco Awareness Week Nov. 14-17. The week begins with a kickoff event on the William Pitt Union Lawn and Patio, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland, from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 14, in which students will be asked to participate in a physical representation showing that one out every five individuals in the United States loses his or her life from tobacco use.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in activities and visit tables from PantherWELL, Stress-Free Zone, and Tobacco Free Allegheny from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 14-15 in Towers Lobby, 3955 Forbes Ave. Additionally, Student Health Services will hold mini-QUIT sessions from noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 16 in Towers Lobby; the QUIT program helps students learn methods for quitting tobacco use.

From 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 17, PantherWELL will sponsor the “Great American Smoke Out” in Towers Lobby. The event will cover tobacco-related topics, including hookah use, smokeless tobacco, lung cancer, and more. Students attending this event will receive T-shirts, as well as additional giveaways.

In addition to Student Health Service, Tobacco Awareness Week is being sponsored by the following Pitt organizations: First-Year Experience Office, Stress-Free Zone, PantherWELL, College Against Cancer, Student Government Board, Outside the Classroom Curriculum, Emerging Leaders, P.A.L.S., First-Year Mentors, Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority, and Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Additional community support is being provided by the nonprofit organization Tobacco Free Allegheny.
