The University of Pittsburgh Responds with Campaign to Assist in Disaster Relief In the Aftermath of the Sept. 11th Tragedy, Pitt Will Sponsor Educational, Volunteer Recruitment, and Fund-Raising Effort

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh will sponsor "The University Responds," a three-pronged effort of education, volunteer recruitment, and fund-raising in response to the Sept. 11th tragedy, from Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 2-4, in the William Pitt Union (WPU) and throughout the University and Oakland business community.

"'The University Responds' effort will be a way of recognizing the various responses from within our community to the tragedy, further educating ourselves on the many aspects of disaster relief; learning about ongoing volunteer opportunities with disaster relief agencies; and providing an additional opportunity to make a financial contribution to various disaster relief agencies, as well as the Sept. 11th Fund," said G. Reynolds Clark, executive director of Community and Governmental Relations at Pitt. "It is my hope that the activities of the first week of October will help each of us to focus our personal responses to the tragedy. Working together we can create a renewed commitment of service to our community and our nation," Clark added.

Education tables, staffed by disaster relief and support agencies, will be in the WPU concourse from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the three-day period for individuals who want to learn about the various aspects of disaster relief, including services available for helping individuals cope with emotional distress. The intent is to build a long-term commitment to disaster relief and volunteer services. In addition, Pitt's Student Government Board in cooperation with the Oakland Business Improvement District will distribute collection cans to Oakland businesses, and the University police will deliver collection cans to University offices.

Those wishing to contribute can either place donations in the cans or mail checks, made payable to "The University Responds," to "The University Responds," University of Pittsburgh, Cashier's Office, G-7 Thackeray Hall, 139 University Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15260.
