Pitt Law School Graduate and Adjunct Faculty Member Named to New Environmental Law Position

PITTSBURGH—Paul M. King, executive director of the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice, this fall has joined the administrative ranks of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in the newly created position of associate director of the Certificate Program in Environmental Law, Science, and Policy. Dean David J. Herring and law professor William V. Luneburg, director of the certificate program, announced the appointment of King, who earned his Juris Doctor degree at Pitt and has been a School of Law adjunct faculty member for 17years.

The Certificate Program is multidisciplinary and open to all Juris Doctor candidates. Students who earn at least 22 credits during their second and third years in various required and elective courses are eligible to receive the certificate. While some courses must be taken in Pitt's School of Law, students may take qualifying courses at other Pittsburgh graduate schools or during a summer program abroad.

Students will not only learn environmental law as it exists in statutes, regulations and case law, but also will be involved in practical application of the law through the law school's Environmental Clinic and other contexts of environmental law and policy. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to work in private practice, government service, corporate practice, environmental advocacy, or environmental consulting.

King will help to recruit students for the certificate program, place program graduates, foster outreach and awareness, and support the academic activities of the program. In addition to performing administrative duties at the School of Law, King will teach Science for Environmental Practitioners, International Environmental Law, and Hazardous Waste Law.

King previously held environmental management and environmental law positions with PPG Industries, Inc. He is a past president of the Air and Waste Management Association and past chairman of the Chemical Manufacturers Association's Environmental Management Committee.

His current memberships include the Allegheny County Board of Health; the environmental committees of the American, Pennsylvania, and Allegheny County Bar Associations; and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Solid Waste Advisory Committee. He is vice chair and a member of the United States Department of Commerce Environmental Technologies Trade Advisory Committee and chair of the Air and Waste Management Association Environmental Commerce Council.

King holds the Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Duquesne University. For eight years, he has been an adjunct professor of environmental management at Duquesne University's Environmental Science and Management Program, where he also is program chairman. In addition, he serves as chairman of the board of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Enterprising Environmental Solutions, Inc.

King also is a member of the board of the Pittsburgh Voyager, a river-based science and mathematics educational program, and of McGuire Memorial, which provides comprehensive services to people with physical and mental disabilities.
