WEISS NAMED DEPARTMENT CHAIR IN PITT'S SCHOOL OF INFORMATION SCIENCES

PITTSBURGH—Martin B. Weiss, associate professor and codirector of the Telecommunications Program at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named chair of the Department of Information Science and Telecommunications in Pitt's School of Information Sciences (SIS). His appointment took effect at the beginning of the Fall term. Weiss' executive duties with the Telecommunications Program have been assumed by his fellow codirector, Richard A. Thompson, who is now sole director of the program.
Weiss has been a Pitt faculty member since 1988. Prior to joining Pitt, he was a senior consultant for Deloitte, Haskins and Sells, now Deloitte and Touche, one of the "Big Five" accounting and consulting companies. He also was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories and MITRE Corporation. He earned the bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University; the master's degree in computer, information, and control engineering from the University of Michigan; and the Ph.D. degree in engineering and public policy from Carnegie Mellon University.
Speaking of Weiss' appointment, SIS Dean Toni Carbo said, "Dr. Weiss is an excellent choice to chair the department. He is widely respected throughout the School and the University, and he brings experience and vision to the programs."
Information Science and Telecommunications is one of two major departments in SIS. The other, the Department of Library and Information Science, has been chaired since 1998 by Christinger Tomer, who will continue in that capacity. Tomer, who is an associate professor of library science, earned the bachelor's degree in English from the College of Wooster in Ohio, and both the master's degree in library science and the Ph.D. degree in library and information science from Case Western Reserve University.
Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, Tomer was an adjunct professor in the Department of Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education at Slippery Rock State University of Pennsylvania and an assistant professor in the School of Library and Information Science at Case Western Reserve University.
