STATEMENT CONCERNING THE WEB SITE OF MATT SCHIROS AND RELATED MATTERS
PITTSBURGH, April 12 -- The University of Pittsburgh has notified Matt Schiros, a Pitt freshman, that his activities involving previously self-described sponsored research on sociological aspects of racism violate University Research Policy. In a letter to Mr. Schiros dated April 10th, the Office of General Counsel of the University directed Mr. Schiros to cease these activities.
The University has recognized the right of Mr. Schiros to exercise his protected First Amendment freedom of speech. Nonetheless, whatever his personal beliefs are and his constitutional right to both hold them and speak them, violations of Federal and University research policies that protect human subjects are not and will not be permitted.
The University will continue to monitor the situation and will continue to respond appropriately.
