PITT OUTDOORS CLUB, WPTS HOST 'THE END – MUSIC AND GAMES FESTIVAL' Live Music, Feats of Strength Cap Semester-End Festival

PITTSBURGH, April 6 -- The Pitt Outdoors Club (POC) and

92.1 WPTS FM will host "The End – Music and Games Festival," on April 21, 2001, a day-long event revolving around feats of strength and local music.

"The End," named to commemorate the weekend before Pitt's final exams, runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on The Cathedral of Learning's lower lawn, and features the POC's 4th annual Scottish Games and WPTS's Lawn Party.

"Imagine a day where men and women are united in a field, throwing telephone poles, tossing rocks, and lifting bales of hay into the air while traffic whizzes past them on Forbes Avenue, all the while live local music pounds in the background," said Ryan Cieslak of the POC, one of the event organizers. "That's the scene you'll find at POC's Scottish Games. The traditional Highland events will run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., and will include the caber toss, sheaf toss, hammer throw, weight toss, and stone throw, pitting five-person teams of local college students against each other."

"The End" will feature musical performances by The Attendants, H.A.R.M., and Esquevez, and Cleveland-based Shot of M. WPTS disc jockeys The Hamburgler and Mecca will entertain the audience between sets.

"Each band's distinctive sound will balance nicely off each other, providing a very modern backdrop to the ancient games, furthering the contrast between city and tradition," Cieslak added.

To cap off the evening , WPTS will host its first ever Lawn Party from

7 p.m. to 11 p.m., featuring the bands Airwolf, The Modey Lemon, and Hovland, with WPTS DJ B-Bonics spinning underground and old-school hip hop between sets.

Formed from ex-Great Eastern members, this will be Airwolf's first WPTS show. The Modey Lemon, fresh from the release of their 7-inch record, was voted one of Pittsburgh's most up-and-coming bands of last year by InPittsburgh Newsweekly. Their Grand Funk-inspired sound draws a loyal crowd, and will complement headliner Hovland's new progression from slow-core to Seam, Polvo and Hurl-seated indie rock. Both The Modey Lemon and Hovland have full-length albums debuting this summer.

The Scottish Games have a registration fee of $20 per teams of five; spectators at the Scottish Games and the Lawn Party attend free. Proceeds from competitor admission fees will be donated to The Access Fund, an organization dedicated to keeping climbing areas open and accessible to the climbing community. Student Advantage, a student discount company, is donating prizes for the Scottish Games. "The End" is a rain or shine event.

"This is the first time POC and WPTS have hosted an event together," said Jennifer Meccariello of WPTS FM. "We hope 'The End' sets a precedent for Pitt campus organizations to collaborate on future events."
