PITTSBURGH, March 30 -- Jere Gallagher, associate professor and chair of the department of health, physical, and recreation education (HPRED), has been appointed associate dean of the University of Pittsburgh's School of Education as announced by Dean Alan Lesgold. Gallagher, who succeeds Rita Bean, will assume her responsibilities at the end of the spring term.

"She is a very effective leader, a very knowledgeable manager, and has the level of dedication to the future of the school that would make her an appropriate successor to Rita Bean," said Lesgold.

Before coming to Pitt in 1981, Gallagher was employed at several elementary and high schools as a physical education teacher. She then moved to Southern Illinois University as an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education until 1981.

Gallagher served not only as chair of HPRED, but also in Pitt's early childhood program, which she coordinated for several years. She also runs the Kinder Kinetics program that serves many children in the region.

In addition to several other publications, Gallagher most recently co-wrote "The Young Child and the Environment" with Nancy Sayre, concentrating on factors that influence development of a physically and psychologically healthy and safe lifestyle for infants, toddlers, and young children.

Gallagher is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, & Dance and the North American Society for Sport Psychology and Physical Activity. She received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from East Carolina University and her Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.
