PITT RESIDENT ASSISTANTS TO RECREATE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 16 -- The University of Pittsburgh Office of Residence Life will present "Journey Through Time: The Underground Railroad," a recreation of the type of journey slaves and abolitionists took in the run for freedom, on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 21 and 22, from 7:30 until
10 p.m., in the tunnels beneath Holland Hall and Schenley Quadrangle.
Written, developed, and acted out by Pitt resident assistants, the "Journey" is free and open to the public, and begins at the north entrance of Holland Hall. Participants will be given an "identity" such as a runaway slave, or an abolitionist, before making the trip, set in the mid-1800s. They will have the opportunity to interact with the actors and become involved in the tour's outcome. Travelers also will visit the "Hall of Time," which will contain scenes and events from the abolitionist period through the civil rights movement.
The program will conclude with a rendition of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech performed by Benjamin Walker, a resident assistant from the Tower A staff.
