PITT'S EUROPEAN UNION CENTER TO HOST DENIS MacSHANE

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 30 -- Denis MacShane, an author and member of the British Parliament who many consider one of the leading international trade union officials of his generation, will speak on "The European Union and the United States: Partners or Rivals?", from 12 to 1 p.m., on Monday, Feb. 5, in Room 4E51 Posvar Hall, on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.

MacShane, a member of the Labour Party, has concentrated his efforts in parliament on economic, manufacturing, fiscal, labor market, and European policy issues. Among his book topics are: the origins of the cold war, a political biography of Francois Mitterand, Poland's independent trade union Solidarity, and the black workers' movement in South Africa.

MacShane's presentation at Pitt is free and open to the public.

MacShane also will speak from 12 to 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the United Steelworkers of America headquarters, downtown. His topic there will be, "The Future of Metal Unions in the Global Economy."

MacShane's visit is sponsored jointly by Pitt's European Union Center at the Center for West European Studies, the Cultural Studies Department, and the International Business Center at the Katz Graduate School of Business, along with the United Steelworkers of America.
