PITTSBURGH, Oct. 14 -- The University of Pittsburgh marks its 30th annual Jazz Seminar and Concert Oct. 30 - Nov. 4, with a line-up of internationally renowned jazz greats, free lectures and seminars, an outreach program, a display of African and Carribbean art, and the annual concert at Carnegie Music Hall, on Saturday, Nov. 4, at

This year's event is dedicated to the late Grover Washington, Jr., whose untimely death in December, 1999 at the age of 56 came just weeks after his last performance at Pitt. The legendary saxophonist participated in the Pitt jazz event

10 times.

This year's performers include: Wallace Roney, trumpet; Oscar Brashear, trumpet; special guest Donald Byrd, trumpet; Curtis Fuller, trombone; Hank Crawford, alto sax; Benny Golson, tenor sax; Larry Coryell, guitar; Geri Allen, piano; John Patitucci, bass; Winard Harper, drums; and Pitt Jazz Studies Director Nathan Davis, saxophones.

CONCERT DETAILS

After just one rehearsal, the musicians take the Carnegie Music Hall stage on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 8:30 p.m., to perform arrangements by Nathan Davis. The diverse playing styles and impromptu nature of the gathering—many of these musicians have never performed together as an ensemble—make this a one-of-a-kind performance.

At intermission, Christine Washington will accept posthumous honors for her husband. Two new members of the International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame will be inducted, and Donald Byrd will be recognized.

The Business of Jazz

Paul Silverthorn, artist representative with GW Jr. Music, Inc., was the former manager of Grover Washington, Jr. That working relationship evolved into a 20-year span of activity, including hundreds of concerts, bookings, recordings, music publishing opportunities, special projects, and more. Silverthorn's comments will highlight those years, as well as tribute updates, foundation work and current events.

A highlight of this year's jazz event will be an exhibition of selected works from the art collection of Donald Byrd. Byrd has been a passionate collector of African-American, African, and Caribbean art for more than 30 years. His holdings include prints and paintings by Henry Ossawa Tanner, Richmond Barthe, and Romare Bearden.

Also on display will be two rare coins bearing the likenesses of Louis Armstrong and Marion Anderson, a permanent gift to the International Academy of Jall Hall of Fame at Pitt from Donald Byrd, and a gesture of friendship and appreciation to Davis for his 30 years as leader of the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH FOR CHILDREN AND SENIORS

In keeping with tradition, two musicians will travel to area schools to perform for elementary, middle, and high school age students.
