PLANS FINALIZED FOR 30TH ANNUAL UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH JAZZ SEMINAR AND CONCERT Event dedicated to the late Grover Washington, Jr.
EDITORS: Please note change in concert time.
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 14 -- The University of Pittsburgh marks its 30th annual Jazz Seminar and Concert Oct. 30 - Nov. 4, with a line-up of internationally renowned jazz greats, free lectures and seminars, an outreach program, a display of African and Carribbean art, and the annual concert at Carnegie Music Hall, on Saturday, Nov. 4, at
8:30 p.m. (Editors, note change in concert time.)
This year's event is dedicated to the late Grover Washington, Jr., whose untimely death in December, 1999 at the age of 56 came just weeks after his last performance at Pitt. The legendary saxophonist participated in the Pitt jazz event
10 times.
This year's performers include: Wallace Roney, trumpet; Oscar Brashear, trumpet; special guest Donald Byrd, trumpet; Curtis Fuller, trombone; Hank Crawford, alto sax; Benny Golson, tenor sax; Larry Coryell, guitar; Geri Allen, piano; John Patitucci, bass; Winard Harper, drums; and Pitt Jazz Studies Director Nathan Davis, saxophones.
CONCERT DETAILS
After just one rehearsal, the musicians take the Carnegie Music Hall stage on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 8:30 p.m., to perform arrangements by Nathan Davis. The diverse playing styles and impromptu nature of the gathering—many of these musicians have never performed together as an ensemble—make this a one-of-a-kind performance.
Tickets are $17 for the general public and are available at the William Pitt Union (WPU) box office or through TicketMaster at (412) 323-1919 or www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $8 for students with a valid Pitt I.D.
At intermission, Christine Washington will accept posthumous honors for her husband. Two new members of the International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame will be inducted, and Donald Byrd will be recognized.
