AT&T GIFT OF $100,000 TO SUPPORT TELECOMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM IN PITT'S SCHOOL OF INFORMATION SCIENCES
PITTSBURGH, August 10 -- The Telecommunications Program in the School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Pittsburgh, considered one of the top two such programs in the nation, recently received a $100,000 gift from the AT&T Foundation.
The gift was presented to Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg, SIS Dean Toni Carbo, and representatives of the Telecom faculty. Among those on hand from AT&T were James Ginty, president, AT&T Pennsylvania; John Swallow, regional vice president, AT&T Wireless Services; and Lenora Vesio, director of corporate affairs for AT&T in Pennsylvania.
Noting the ongoing relationship between Pitt and AT&T, Nordenberg said, "The success of our Telecommunications Program would not be possible without the support of industry partners like AT&T. Due in large part to this most recent gift, our graduates will be able to understand, design, analyze, deploy, and manage wireless telecommunications and networking systems."
"Pittsburgh is a vital market for AT&T Wireless Services, and we are committed to nurturing the talent we need to sustain this fast-growing business," said Ginty. "The University of Pittsburgh's program in wireless information systems is one of the most innovative in the nation, and we are delighted to help support its continued development."
AT&T Corporation and the AT&T Foundation have continued to play a significant role in the creation and growth of the University's Telecommunications Program. Since 1985, AT&T's combined cash and in-kind equipment support amounts to nearly $1.5 million.
This partnership has supported the development of a world-class program, and this latest gift will support the development of a wireless information systems track (WIS-track) in the Master of Science in Telecommunication degree and Ph.D. concentration in Telecommunications. Prashant Krishnamurthy, Ph.D., who joined the Telecom faculty last September to develop a WIS-track, will administer the grant for the program.
