PITT'S COLLEGE OF GENERAL STUDIES OFFERS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS

PITTSBURGH, June 22 -- In response to the heavy regional and national demand for professionals in the information systems field, the University of Pittsburgh College of General Studies (CGS) is offering technology workers and nontraditional students an opportunity to earn a Certificate in Information Systems Design, through a new 18-credit program.

Made available jointly through CGS and Pitt's internationally-renowned School of Information Sciences, the program prepares participants for work in the technology field, helps technology employees advance their careers, allows degree-seeking CGS students to augment their studies, and assists those with a bachelor's degree who want to enter the information management field. Many of the courses are available in the evenings, on Saturdays, at off-campus satellite locations, or through external studies, in keeping with the CGS mission to provide diverse educational opportunities for nontraditional students.

According to the Pittsburgh Region Occupation and Workforce Link, positions in database administration are expected to grow by 24 percent in the next year, market research by 32 percent, on-line marketing by 30 percent, and computer support by 40 percent. This new certificate program will prepare participants for employment in systems design, database management, network design, expert system design, and other positions in banking, healthcare, libraries, communication, education, private industry, and government.

Since 1908, CGS has been helping nontraditional students reach their academic goals as they balance school, work, and family commitments.
