PITT CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR NAMED VISITING PROFESSOR AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY

Contact:

PITTSBURGH, April 3 -- University of Pittsburgh Chemistry Professor John Yates will lecture and teach at Cambridge University in May, 2000, as the winner of the Linnett Visiting Professorship for 2000.

Yates, the R.K. Mellon Professor of Chemistry and Physics and director of the University Surface Science Center at Pitt, is the seventh recipient of the award, the highest honor Cambridge University's chemistry department can bestow on a foreign scientist. The professorship honors Jack Linnett, who served as head of that department before becoming vice chancellor of the university.

Yates, of Allison Park, PA, is best known for his research in surface chemistry studies, both single crystal and high area substrates. He and his research group are developing new surface measurement techniques and using these techniques to study molecular processes on metal, semi-conductor, and insulator surfaces. The group is examining the molecular structure and chemical reactivity of surface species, as applied to corrosion prevention, catalysis,

semi-conductor processing, and nanotechnology.

Yates received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Juniatta College in Huntingdon, PA, and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.
