UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH JOINS CHATHAM COLLEGE TO CELEBRATE "THE YEAR OF SOUTH ASIA"
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 6 -- The University of Pittsburgh's Asian Studies Program joins Chatham College to celebrate "The Year of South Asia" with a special program beginning at 12 p.m. on Friday, January 21. All events will be held on the Chatham College campus at the sites indicated.
The schedule for the day is:
12 p.m., Eddy Theatre
"Introduction to the Dances of India," presented by Sharon Lowen, director of Asian Studies at the American Embassy School in New Delhi, who has lived in India for more than 25 years and is one of that country's top classical dancers.
1 p.m., Anderson Dining Hall
Lunch Break
2:15 p.m., Margaret Sanger Hall, Coolidge
Symposium on "Challenges to Democracy: Militarism in Asia." Moderated by Joseph Alter, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh. Speakers and topics include:
• Apurba Kundu, lecturer in South Asian Studies, University of Bradford, U.K., on "Militarism in India: The Army and Civil Society in Consensus"
• Siddarth Chandra, assistant professor, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, on "The Military and Politics of Indonesia"
• Marvin G. Weinbaum, foreign affairs analyst for the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, U.S. State Department, and professor emeritus, University of Illinois, on "The Military and Politics in Pakistan"
4:30 p.m., Woodland Art Gallery
Reception and exhibition of prints by the Pittsburgh Print Group, entitled, "Mudras: The Hand and Body Language of Southeast Asia"
