UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH PROFESSORS NAMED SCIENCE FELLOWS
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 7 -- Two University of Pittsburgh professors have been named Fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in recognition of their professional achievements and contributions to promoting science.
John S. Earman, professor and chairman of the department of the history and philosophy of science, was honored for distinguished contributions to his field, particularly to the philosophy of physics. Earman is a resident of Squirrel Hill.
Marwan Simaan, the Bell of PA and Bell Atlantic professor of electrical engineering in the School of Engineering, was honored for outstanding contributions to signal processing methods for imaging the Earth's subsurface zone, for inspired teaching, and for pioneering work in Stackelberg strategies for dynamic systems. Simaan is a resident of Upper St. Clair, Pa.
The AAAS said that the Fellowship recognizes the professors' "efforts toward advancing science or fostering applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished."
Founded in 1848, the AAAS represents the world's largest federation of scientists, and works to advance science for human well-being through its projects, programs and publications, including the prestigious, peer-reviewed journal, Science.
