GUEST LECTURER TO SPEAK ON WOMEN IN MODERN JEWISH HISTORY
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 12 -- Paula Hyman, chair of Yale University's Program in Judaic Studies, will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, Murray & Forbes Ave., Squirrel Hill. Her appearance, co-sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh's Women's Studies program, is part of the Women's Studies Fall 1999 Speaker Series. The event is free and open to the public. Professor Hyman's talk is titled "Women at the Center: The Emergence of Women in Modern Jewish History." Hyman is the Lucy Moses Professor of Modern Jewish History at Yale, where she teaches courses in the social and cultural history of Jews in modern Europe and the United States and in Jewish woman's history. Prior to her position at Yale, she taught at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
A successful author, Hyman is also co-editor of "The Jewish Family: Myths and Reality." She was the 1999 recipient of the American Jewish Committee Akiba Award for exceptional contribution to the enrichment of Jewish intellectual, cultural and communal life in the United States.
