ANDREW ROSS, DISNEY CELEBRATION RESIDENT, TO SPEAK AT PITT
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 14 -- Andrew Ross, cultural critic and director of the American Studies program at New York University, who spent a year's sabbatical in the Disney-created town of Celebration, Florida, will lecture at the University of Pittsburgh's Frick Fine Arts Auditorium Friday, Sept. 24, at
4:30 p.m.
Ross' recently published "THE CELEBRATION CHRONICLES: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Property Value in Disney's New Town," examines the most highly scrutinized, analyzed and demonized new town in America. While Ross admires the town's plan, designed to foster an active and involved populace, the book is also a critique of the dangers of corporate involvement in the once-public sphere of urban planning.
A writer for "Artforum," "The Nation," "The Village Voice," and many other publications, Ross is the author or editor of ten books including, "Real Love," "The Chicago Gangster Theory of Life," "Strange Weather," and "No Respect."
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Pitt's Graduate Program for Cultural Studies, with support from the Department of English, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the University Center for Social and Urban Research.
