LOCAL STUDENTS STUDY "WORLD OF GERMS" AT PITT
PITTSBURGH, July 14 -- University of Pittsburgh educators are introducing students from two Pittsburgh elementary schools to the "World of Germs" in a two-week Junior Science Institute at Pitt's School of Education.
Bradford Lewis, assistant professor of science education in Pitt's Department of Instruction and Learning, proposed the summer institute which is funded by The Grable and Pittsburgh Foundations.
Approximately 50 students who will be 5th graders this fall at Crescent Elementary School in Homewood and Manchester Elementary School on the North Side are studying microbiology in this hands-on science experience. The students are growing, harvesting, and measuring bacteria and fungi, making yogurt and root beer, and learning various laboratory techniques.
Taught by two practicing teachers from Crescent Elementary and Penn Trafford Elementary and four of Pitt's graduating master of teaching students, the program fosters ongoing professional development. The Crescent students are attending the first session, which began July 6 and runs through July 16, and the Manchester students will attend the second session which begins July 19 and runs through July 30.
There will be an open house the last day of each session, Friday, July 16 and Friday, July 30.
