PITT'S SCHOOL OF INFORMATION SCIENCES AMONG NATION'S TOP GRADUATE PROGRAMS SAYS U.S. NEWS

PITTSBURGH, March 31 -- The School of Information Sciences (SIS) Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at the University of Pittsburgh is ranked third among the top graduate programs in the country, according to a report recently issued by U.S. News & World Report.

According to the rankings, which are based on a survey of deans, program directors and faculty of accredited library science graduate programs, Pitt's program tied for third place with Syracuse University and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and just behind the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill who shared the top spot.

SIS led the rankings for specific areas of library science graduate programs. The program was named first in health librarianship, third in information systems, and fourth in both services for children and youth and archives and preservation.

The results appear in the 2000 America's Best Graduate Schools guidebook.

"Obviously we are pleased U.S. News has recognized our school in this way, especially because this recognition reflects the opinions of our peers," said SIS Dean Toni Carbo. "It is a tribute to both the excellence and dedication of our faculty and the quality of our students. We continue to strive for excellence in educating leaders and contributing new knowledge."

The School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh educates information professionals for a wide range of specializations in the information field. The School's focus is on the integration of people, knowledge and technology for decision making, problem solving and learning. SIS offers six degree programs and three certificate programs in the areas of information science, library and information science and telecommunications. The internationally renowned faculty is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research.
