EXPERT ON CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM RELATIONS TO SPEAK AT PITT

PITTSBURGH, March 26 -- A leading expert on Islam and

Christian-Muslim relations will speak on "Globalization and the Muslims of the West" from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 7 at the University of Pittsburgh. The lecture will be held in Room A115, Graduate School of Public Health,

130 DeSoto Street in Oakland.

Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad, a professor of the History of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, will discuss the impact of Muslim migration, settlement and citizenship in Europe and America on Western concepts of pluralism, democracy and cultural cohesion.

She also will examine the impact of de-colonization, racism and Islamophobia on Muslim identity in Western contexts.

Haddad is a former president of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) and the American Academy of Religion, Northeast Region. She also is a recipient of the Chancellor's Medal for Excellence in Research, University of Massachusetts. Her publications include: Muslims on the Americanization Path; Islam, Gender and Social Change; Christian-Muslim Encounters, and The Muslims of America.
