BARRY LOPEZ NEXT UP IN PITT'S WRITERS SERIES
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 23 -- Barry Lopez, essayist, author, and short story writer, will read at the University of Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series Tuesday, March 16, at
8:15 p.m. in the Cathedral of Learning, Room 324. The event is free and open to the public.
Lopez, the fifth author to appear in this year's series, writes often about the relationship between the physical landscape and human culture. He is the author of "Arctic Dreams," for which he received the National Book Award; "Of Wolves and Men," for which he received the John Burroughs Medal; six works of fiction, including "Winter Count" and "Field Notes;" and two collections of essays, "Crossing Open Ground" and "About This Life."
He contributes regularly to Harper's, The Georgia Review, American Short Fiction, Story, The Paris Review, DoubleTake, Orion, Outside, Manoa and other publications in the United States and abroad. His work appears in dozens of anthologies and has been widely translated.
Lopez's stories were first published in 1966. He has been a full-time writer since leaving graduate school in 1970 but occasionally accepts invitations to teach. In 1986 he was the Distinguished Visiting Writer at Eastern Washington University and in 1989 the Welch Professor of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
Lopez is the recipient of the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lannan Foundation Award, Pushcart Prizes in fiction and nonfiction, a Governor's Award, and other honors.
The final author in the Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series is Tess Gallagher.
