SYMPOSIUM ON GLOBALIZING HUMAN SERVICES TO HIGHLIGHT INTERNATIONAL WEEK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH

Contact:

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 18 -- A first-of-its-kind symposium, "The Globalization of Human Services: Forging Partnerships for the 21st Century," will highlight the celebration of International Week, Sept. 21-26, at the University of Pittsburgh.

The symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 25, in the William Pitt Union Building, Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard. Its purpose is to create a forum for dialogue on how southwestern Pennsylvania can take the lead in human services globally and to help individuals and agencies link with a human service network and contribute ideas on how to expand human services in the international arena.

Cosponsored by Pitt's University Center for International Studies/International Development Project, Office of Child Development and the School of Social Work, the symposium will feature experts from the academic, non-profit and government sectors. It is designed for practitioners and administrators of human services, health and mental health care providers, students, educators, public agency staff, representatives from businesses, foundations and government, plus community and faith-based groups.

Also included will be a Human Services Marketplace Exhibition Hall, from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

For information on the symposium or exhibit hall, call 412-624-4780.

Another highlight of the week is the 19th Annual Latin American & Caribbean Festival, noon to 10:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, in the William Pitt Union.

Sponsored by Pitt's Center for Latin American Studies and the Latin American Cultural Union, the festival will feature exhibits, arts and crafts, foods, music and dance from Latin America and the Caribbean.
