PITT HOLDS DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR EBERLY HALL
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 10 -- Alumni Hall on the University of Pittsburgh campus will become Eberly Hall at an 11:30 a.m. dedication ceremony, Friday, September 11. The building is being named Eberly Hall in recognition of the Eberly family's long-term support of the University of Pittsburgh.
The Eberly Family Foundation and the Eberly Charitable Trust have supported a number of initiatives at Pitt, including student scholarships, the Shakespeare in the Schools program, and a chair in biotechnology. Their most recent gift will be used in conjunction with state funds to renovate Alumni Hall in support of the teaching and research activities of the Department of Chemistry.
University Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg praised the Eberly family for their commitment to the region and to the education of the region's citizens. "The Eberly family has been extremely generous to the University of Pittsburgh over the years. The principal beneficiaries of this latest example of their generosity are the students who will be educated in a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advanced chemical discovery, invention and learning. The Eberly family's support will provide our students with unparalleled opportunities to participate in leading edge research," Nordenberg said.
He added that the renovation and rededication of Eberly Hall was an excellent example of the "spirit of collaboration" that is one of the hallmarks of the University. "This dedication ceremony celebrates the Eberlys' generosity along with Pitt's productive partnership with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Taken together, they will help us educate tomorrow's leaders, advance the development of new knowledge, and further strengthen our institution," Nordenberg said.
A cornerstone with the new building name will be unveiled at the dedication ceremony. Speaking at the ceremony, in addition to Chancellor Nordenberg, will be Pitt Board of Trustees Chair J.W. Connolly, College of Arts and Sciences Dean N. John Cooper, and Chemistry Department Chair Craig Wilcox. Robert E. Eberly will speak on behalf of his family.
