GAY TALESE TO KICK OFF PITT'S NEW WRITERS SERIES
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 9 -- Author Gay Talese will be the opening guest at the University of Pittsburgh's "Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series" on Monday, Sept. 21, at 8:15 p.m. in 120 David Lawrence Hall, Forbes Ave., Oakland.
Pitt's new "Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series" is free and open to the public. It will join the Three Rivers Lecture Series and the International Poetry Forum as one of the three major reading series in the city.
Talese, best known for having been among the first writers to apply techniques of fiction to nonfiction writing, has written such best-sellers as "Thy Neighbor's Wife," "Honor Thy Father," "The Kingdom and the Power," and the recent "Unto the Sons." He received a 1970 Christopher Award for "The Kingdom and the Power."
Tom Wolfe has referred to Talese as the inventor of "new" journalism. The New Jersey native's most recent work is "Writing Creative Nonfiction: The Literature of Reality" which he wrote with Barbara Lounsberry.
In addition to Talese, writers scheduled to appear at Pitt's series over the next few months are Maxine Hong Kingston, Marita Golden, Mark Doty, Barry Lopez, and Tess Gallagher.
