SIX PITT STUDENTS AMONG LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACADEMY HONOREES

PITTSBURGH, August 27 -- Six students from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) are among ten persons who participated in the 1998 Municipal Intern Program through the Local Government Academy.

The Local Government Academy was established in 1983 to promote "excellence in government through education." In 1995, it instituted the Municipal Intern Program to provide a service to Allegheny County municipalities, authorities and Councils of Governments by placing students from graduate programs of local colleges and universities in summer internships. The program is funded by the Allegheny County commissioners.

Participating in the program this year from GSPIA, along with the municipalities in which they served, were: Jeannette Thornton, Baldwin Borough; Dondj Ojeda, City of Clairton; Peter Dzewaltowski, Coraopolis Borough; Alison Bonebrake, Tarentum Borough; Timothy Fitzsimmons, Whitehall Borough, and Amy Niadna, Wilkinsburg Borough.

"As the school celebrates its fortieth anniversary, we are pleased that we are able to continue our long history of connecting the students' educational program with practical experience in service to our community," said GSPIA Dean Carolyn Ban.

All 1998 interns were honored at a luncheon August 27 at the Allegheny Club in Three Rivers Stadium, where they received certificates from the Allegheny County commissioners.
